SA Chef congratulates Harbour House on winning the 2019 RASA Cape Town Neighbourhood Awards. Duncan Scarrott reports.

What shaped up to be an evening filled with wine, awards and celebrations, the Restaurant Association of South Africa (RASA) hosted the Cape Town Neighbourhood Restaurant 2019 awards during The Tops at Spar Wine Show at Grandwest Casino. An apt setting for an awards ceremony celebrating the very best restaurants that Cape Town has to offer.

For those that don’t know, RASA is a non-profit organisation that was created to act in the interest of the South African Restauranteur and is the only official body recognised by government to speak on behalf of restaurant owners, franchises and suppliers in South Africa. With direct representation in Government, they are the cornerstone behind the restaurants in Cape Town, and the rest of South Africa.

The event offered a wide spread of cheeses, fruitful preserves, and a selection of wine pairings that culminated in a pleasant evening filled with cheers and excitement as we eagerly awaited the announcement of the winning restaurants.

The Neighbourhood Awards, hosted annually, saw restaurants of all varieties competing to be the best in Cape Town. All nominees were voted in by members of RASA as well as members of the public via the RASA website. Whether a small, family owned coffeeshop, or a large restaurant chain, the awards saw restaurants of all sizes being celebrated for their excellent service. Wendy Alberts, CEO of RASA, was the organising guru behind the entire event, as well as the MC for the evening.

The awards, certainly not a Cape Town exclusive, were held in Johannesburg as well as KwaZulu-Natal. Each of the winning restaurants will also be competing for the RASA Rosetta Award. This is an award that’s given to restaurants striving for service excellence in their industry. The Rosetta Award is the highest recognition for service excellence and overall contribution to the upliftment of the restaurant industry.
