The West and Central African Council for Agricultural Research (CORAF) is helping fund integrated fishery education through a project called the West African Agriculture Productivity Program (WAAPP).
The WAAPP directs educational projects at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria, the University of Buea in Cameroon, and the University of Njalah in Sierra Leone. According to CORAF, the initial idea behind the project was to promote integrated fish farming from an academic, research perspective.
Interestingly, there have been unintended entrepreneurial outcomes from supporting integrated fisheries at a university level. One such example is Olubunmi Aderinsola Yahya, a graduate from the University of Ibadan’s Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries Management (DAFM).
CORAF has reported that after earning her master’s degree from DAFM, Yahya successfully started her own fish products company that now employs six people.
