Who says that World Gin Day has to be celebrated only on 12 June? Here are some ideas to beGIN the party this weekend and beyond…

Taking place on the second Saturday in June each year, World Gin Day is celebrated the world over by juniper lovers. Launched in 2009, events and establishments everywhere celebrate gin – in a G&T, in cocktails or neat. Here’s what some of our locals are getting up to this year.

Try Flowstone’s Delicious Foamy Cocktail

Flowstone’s Snuffbox Gin was developed as part of the collector’s edition range. The snuffbox tree – Oncoba Spinosa – gets its name from its hard-shelled fruit which, for thousands of years have been hollowed out to store snuff in. The dark fruit itself has an intoxicatingly complex smell that includes notes of cacao, burnt caramel and dessert wine intertwined with warm almost fruity notes. This tree had been growing just meters from the distillery door for years and to be honest the fruit was just thrown over the fence because they damaged the lawnmower. This carried on until one day distillers, Mark and Glyn French, picked one up and smelled it. Its dark, rich and warm flavours were crying out to be made into a gin. One month later Flowstone Snuffbox gin was born going on to win a Double-Gold medal before it was even released.

Available in stylish gift boxes that include a pack of dried orange slices or as a single bottle, they make an ideal gift for the gin lover.

For World Gin Day on 12 June, try this delicious cocktail which has a classic white foam topping – and is easier than you think. The frothy texture on the surface of the drink adds a creamy rich flavour. It is tantalizing, sexy and yummy.

Ingredients

  • 50ml Flowstone Snuffbox gin
  • 15ml Simple syrup
  • 15ml Lemon juice
  • 1 Egg white
  • Nutmeg, cocoa, or chocolate powder to garnish

Method

Put Flowstone Snuffbox gin, simple syrup, lemon juice and egg white into a shaker with no ice.  Shake vigorously for 30 seconds.  The better the shake the better the foam. Add ice and shake again for another 20 seconds to cool the drink. Pour carefully into a cocktail glass keeping the ice back. The foam will float to the top. Grate a light dusting of nutmeg over the foam. A light round of cocoa or chocolate powder and draw a knife through the round to make a perfect heart. Enjoy!

Celebrating with Tanqueray’s Bespoke Experiences

South Africa’s much-loved gin brand Tanqueray celebrates World Gin Month by inviting you to an experience set to elevate your taste with sun-kissed Tanqueray Flor de Sevilla and transform chilly winter occasions and spaces into warm, orange-scented oases of delight.

The World Gin Day celebrations kicked off with a sundowner picnic featuring some of Mzansi’s most celebrated stars; Blue Mbombo, Tino Chinyani, Abigail Visagie, Themba Gwejela and Nasiphi Ngcwabe. The friends of Tanqueray took over the magnificent Cradle Boutique Hotel and turned it into the perfect backdrop for that sun-kissed picnic moment. They created the perfect template of how to enjoy a sun-soaked intimate outdoor experience accompanied by the indulgent taste of the bittersweet oranges courtesy of Tanqueray Flor De Sevilla.

Whether one is playing around with Spanish inspired tapas, experimenting with flavours, or just looking to enjoy the traditional Tanqueray Flor De Sevilla and Tonic, under the African sunset, there definitely is a cocktail for everyone this World Gin Month.

From the classic Flor De Sevilla and Tonic, much loved Negroni, zesty Seville Spritzer to the bubbly Sevilla Fizz, these cocktails recipes have been developed to enable local consumers to still enjoy the taste of summer the unmistakably Tanqueray way. Consumers can follow the World Gin Month conversation and find out more on how to prepare delectable cocktails by following the brand via social media on @TanquerayZA.

Art Meets Gin with Musgrave

Inspired by a bottle of Musgrave Original Gin, artist Jasmine Jagger found herself daydreaming of the pith helmeted derring-do of Maurice Boon Musgrave, grandfather of the founder of Musgrave Gin, Simone Musgrave. Maurice left Plymouth in 1949 bound for Africa to start a new life exploring, trading and discovering the people and the land.

In the throes of lockdown, in Jasmine’s studio in Cape Town, she painted a tribute to Maurice Boon Musgrave which features the Gin Pirate – a symbol of adventure and great courage in the face of adversity. Jasmine explains that, “When I painted this piece, South Africa was in a hard lockdown – alcohol was banned, and I was fantasising of bootlegging and of swashbuckling rebellion.”

Musgrave Original Gin is made up of a selection of 11 botanicals, including African Ginger and Grains of Paradise – each reflecting some aspect of the ancient African Spice Route. Cardamom tones and other spices complement a flavour profile that spans a continent.

Jasmine Jagger will be exhibiting her work with Musgrave at the Candice Berman Gallery at the Riverside Mall in Bryanston in Johannesburg from 27 May.
