The Cape Wine Auction (CWA) – one of South Africa’s premier annual charity events and a much sought after ticket on the social calendar – will not take place next year, due to the COVID-19 restrictions.

“Due to ongoing travel restrictions, our international guests may not be able to attend and, with uncertainty around certain global sporting and entertainment events taking place in 2021, it will be difficult to ensure the fulfilment of lots,?  says CWA chairman Raymond Ndlovu.

“However,” adds Ndlovu, “we will be back in 2022 with an event that promises to be bigger and better than ever and we hope to raise a record amount to support education in the Winelands.”

Ndlovu also hints at two charity events taking place next year – one locally and one internationally – that the Cape Wine Auction Trustees will hold, in order to raise much-needed funds for the support of education in the Cape Winelands. More details to follow in due course.

This year, the Cape Wine Auction raised more than R17 million at a spectacular event held at the Boschendal Wine Estate. This amount, together with the R88 million that has been raised since the first auction was held in 2014, means that the wine charity auction has amassed a staggering R105 million since its inception.

In 2014 The Cape Wine Auction Trust was established to support education in the Winelands by raising money through the hosting the Cape Wine Auction – a top-drawer two-day glamorous event that celebrates, on a global stage, South Africa’s vinous offering in line with uniting the industry around a common philanthropic goal. The outcome: to channel all of that cash back into the area that needs it most: education.

The first Cape Wine Auction was held at Delaire Graff Wine Estate back in 2014 with over R7 million raised. Four beneficiary organisations were funded.

In 2020, over R17 million was raised and allocated to 28 partners who make a profound impact on education and the lives of children in the Cape Winelands. Managed by the Auction Trust, a Partners’ Conference has been established where the partners get to know each other, learn from each other and support one another. This collaborative mindset has already resulted in enormous impact and increased efficiencies.

The Cape Wine Auction Trust Trustees are Raymond Ndlovu (Chairman), Paul Cluver (Deputy Chairman), Wendy Appelbaum, Ken Kinsey-Quick, Iain Banner and Dominique Enthoven.
