With social media driving just about everything these days, it’s no surprise that most trends on it transfer into real life. With that said, today we’re going to look at some fascinating dessert trends that have emerged from social media this year.
- Jelly Art Cakes
Anyone who has eaten a trifle can tell you that jelly and cake can be good together, but why not make art with it? Something that resembles a large ball of glass art or a fancy paperweight. If you have been on #desserttok or #caketok you might have come across this beautiful trend which involves baking a cake and then adding and setting jelly on top of the cake. The floral and nature-based 3D decorations are added to the gelatin or agar from the bottom of the cake with special nozzles and syringes. - Mochi Ice Cream
If you’ve been on #desserttok this year, or any dessert Pinterest board for that matter, chances are you’ve seen people rolling ice cream into little balls of rice dough and dusting them with sugar. This is Mochi ice cream, a Japanese dessert which found popularity on TikTok, of course. The ice cream is wrapped in a sweet, pounded rice dough, and has a similar texture to the chew of boba, another fun trendy dessert. Mochi comes in a variety of flavours, such as strawberry, green tea, chocolate, mango, and vanilla being some of the most popular. - Boba!
Boba has blown up the internet recently, with new boba tea shops opening all over! But what exactly is Boba? Well, the Boba itself are the tapioca pearls at the bottom of the drink, but also refers to the drink itself, also known as “bubble tea”. These aesthetically pleasing, sweet pearls are made from tapioca or cassava starch and formed into small spheres, sweetened, and added to a wide variety of teas, coffees, and slushies. The boba pearls also come in a variety of flavours, and you can even make them yourself!
